Happy Holidays and Reflections on 2017

It’s been such a busy time of year, I’m not going to do any better than putting up one post this month. It’s my annual Happy Holidays post, and I’m reminded of how much I have to be grateful for this year. As a writer, I could not keep at it without my family, friends, readers, writing colleagues, and publishing house staff cheering me on. I am incredibly fortunate to have so many supportive people behind me!

2017 has also been a difficult year for many of us, but I’ll focus on the good stuff first.

In late 2016, my novel The City of Seven Gods came out, and–as humbly as I can say–2017 was the year when I could add: “award-winning author” to my biography. Early in 2017, The City of Seven Gods was shortlisted for 2016 Sci Fi/Fantasy Book of the Year in the Foreword INDIES, and then, in August, it won Best Fantasy/Horror in the 2017 Killer Nashville Awards. On a night I will always remember, I attended a literary awards program for the first time in my life, and was called up to the podium to accept the prize and give a victory speech.

Another big highlight of the year was the release of The Sim Ru Prophecy in June, the fourth and final book in the Werecat series. It was gratifying to bring Jacks’ story to completion, a project that began in 2012 and was brought to life by Vagabondage Press. Working with VP publisher Fawn Neun and my editor N. Apythia Morges, we put together a new marketing plan that reinvigorated the series, including re-releasing the first installment The Rearing as permafree. The books soared in the charts throughout the last half of the year with The Rearing holding a spot on Amazon’s top ten best sellers in gay fiction for several months.

I also placed a new novel with a new publisher, to be released in late 2018. I’ll have more news to share about that in the coming months! Meanwhile, I’ve been working on a follow-up to The City of Seven Gods. I hope to have that out in the world in 2019.

Personally, it was also a great year for friend reunions and celebrations. In July, Genaro and I visited our good friend Jorge in Mexico City, and he hosted us at his fabulous B&B The Red Tree House. We celebrated Genaro’s big 5-0 just a few weeks back on a Caribbean cruise with some of our closest friends, including Jurgen and Thorsten from Germany. 🙂

I do have to acknowledge that in the background, from start to finish, 2017 has been harrowing, surreal, and at times terrifying with respect to the political climate, the erosion of civil rights, under the U.S. President’s regime and our Republican-controlled Congress. Nearly every week, there has been an assault on human dignity and social justice. Many of us have felt it personally. With the president’s nationalistic rhetoric and posturing, and the spectre of so-called “Religious Freedom” legislation, I have never felt less safe in America as a gay man. I have also been anxious and angry on behalf of the many women in my life as well as friends and colleagues who are transgender, or undocumented, or Black, or Muslim, or assumed to be Muslim by their skin color. To describe our national climate as hostile would be an understatement.

There have been bright spots with the failures of Trump’s immigration ban on Muslims and his attempted ban on transgender servicemen and women as well as the defeat of the Republican-led repeal of affordable health care. We have been mobilized as #TheResistance and created the largest worldwide political demonstration in history: The Women’s March. We successfully preserved progressive legislation in many cases and even won elections for fair-minded candidates. We have supported women and men coming forward with their stories of sexual assault and harassment vis-a-vis the #MeToo campaign and held perpetrators accountable for their actions across the film industry, the halls of government, and many other sectors.

The fight goes on, and here’s to hoping that 2018 is the year when defense turns to leadership. Wouldn’t it be great if we weren’t reacting every day to some outrageous attack on fairness and human dignity and instead had leaders who were guided by those values? I think the tide is turning. I cannot shake my belief that there are more Americans who believe in the promise of a diverse, pluralistic, democratic society than those who seek to destroy it. Anyway, that’s what’s been getting me through the day.

My very best wishes for a happy, peaceful, joyous holiday season, and my deepest gratitude.

The City of Seven Gods featured at Adelphi University’s Authors and Artists Exhibit

I’m really happy to have one of my titles included in Adelphi University’s annual Authors and Artists Exhibit. Each year, the university invites members of the school community to share their published work in a reception and a display. The reception was last Thursday, and the exhibit is running through the month of October at the Ruth Harley University Center Gallery. You can see a full list of works on display here.

The exhibit also includes short videos of authors talking about their books. Here’s my video on The City of Seven Gods.

Thanks!!

And the award goes to…

I attended the Killer Nashville International Writers’ Conference this past weekend, and I return with some pretty darn amazing news.

The City of Seven Gods won a Silver Falchion for Best Book of the Year, Horror and Fantasy!!!

I’ll remember the awards dinner forever, sweating it out as the program approached my category, the surreality of the announcement with my book on the big video screen, sharing the moment with my fantastically supportive husband, and adlibbing a short acceptance speech, which I really should have given more thought to!

Here’s what the Silver Falchion looks like.

And here’s what I looked like up at the podium.

Since 2008, the Silver Falchion awards recognize outstanding new titles by authors whose work incorporates elements of suspense, thriller, and mystery. Some of the other winners this year include Kathyrn Lane (Waking Up in Medellin) for Best Fiction Book of the Year, J.A. Jance (Clawback) for Best Adult Thriller, and Randall Reneau (The Medinandi License) for Best Action Adventure. The 2017 awards program also featured the presentation of the John Seigenthaler Award to graphic novelist and author Max Allan Collins (Road to Perdition).

I’ve described The City of Seven Gods as somewhat of an adult companion piece to my young adult Atlantis series (The Seventh Pleiade, Banished Sons of Poseidon) in that it explores the same sort of ancient world mythology and folklore but takes on some grittier themes. All of my titles are special to me, though in some ways, the recognition The City of Seven Gods has received is particularly meaningful. I took some chances with portraying sensitive themes like temple prostitution and slavery and really pushed myself in developing the two main characters’ voices, Kelemun and Ja’bar. I’m so happy that the result has been well-received, and I thank Bold Strokes Books for believing in the book, my super editor Jerry Wheeler for helping to make the manuscript shine, and to my family, friends and readers for believing in me as well.

And here I am with the Silver Falchion when I got back to NYC on Sunday.

The event was a quick trip for me by necessity, and I had a great time on Saturday as a panelist for the morning session: “Go There: Writing Protagonists Who Bring It,” as well as attending the lunch program featuring Max Allan Collins and the afternoon breakout sessions. I met some really fabulous people, and I have to give a shoutout to Joseph Terrell (author of the Harrison Weaver mysteries) and January Kerr (The Patriarchy Project) who I really enjoyed getting to know.

I’m basking in the glory for a short while. Genaro and I are also taking a trip to one of my favorite cities Montréal this upcoming Labor Day weekend as a sort of awards and birthday celebration. But I expect to be back to work on the follow up to The City of Seven Gods really soon.

Come see me at the Killer Nashville International Writers’ Conference!

Retrieved from Killer Nashville’s website

I’m headed out to Nashville this weekend for the first time. That’s because The City of Seven Gods is a finalist for Killer Nashville’s 2017 Silver Falchion award: Best Novel (Horror/Fantasy)!

So yeah, I’m pretty excited about that. The book has gotten some great reviews, some nice buzz, garnering a finalist spot for Book of the Year in the 2016 Foreword INDIES awards earlier in the year.

Killer Nashville’s International Writers Conference and awards program is the premier forum for writers in the areas of mystery, thrillers, crime novels and suspense. Since their founding in 2006, they have expanded to include fantasy and sci fi that incorporates those elements, which of course I’m always glad to see. The conference takes place August 24th – August 27th at Embassy Suites South Nashville/Cool Springs. You can find information about registration and the conference schedule here.

On Saturday, August 26th, I’ll be on a 9:20 am panel entitled: Go There: Writing Protagonists Who Will Bring It, moderated by mystery author Joseph Terrell and including panelists Cate Holahan (The Widowers Wife), Howard Owens (the Willie Black mysteries), Kerry Peresta (The Hunting), and Reavis Worthham (The Sonny Hawke and Red River series). I’m also scheduled for book signings at 11:20 – 11:40 am and 1:20 – 1:40 pm that day, so stop by and say hello!

The awards dinner is at 7:00 pm if you want to have a nice meal and cheer on my book. I’m really looking forward to meeting authors and readers and checking out the panels and workshops throughout the day!
